More plausible than one might like to believe. But the analysis of tension between China and the Islamic nations seems off. Let's remember that tension between the West and Islamic nations does not come directly because the west is secular or materialistic, much less "free," but comes at the heels of generations of violent actions usurping the sovereignty of Islamic peoples.
China might well mistreat muslims as badly as have the British and Americans. But they have not to date.
The Muslims do not need to have their sovereignty usurped to decide to videotape assorted Jihadic maimings - you see, the simple principal of Dhimmitude requires them to seek out and kill the infidels that refuse to submit, and make slaves of those that will.
Dhimmitude is the status that Islamic law, the Sharia, mandates for non-Muslims, primarily Jews and Christians. Dhimmis, "protected people," are free to practice their religion in a Sharia regime, but are made subject to a number of humiliating regulations designed to enforce the Qur'an's command that they "feel themselves subdued" (Sura 9:29). This denial of equality of rights and dignity remains part of the Sharia, and, as such, is part of the law that global jihadists are laboring to impose everywhere, ultimately on the entire human race.
The dhimmi attitude of chastened subservience has entered into Western academic study of Islam, and from there into journalism, textbooks, and the popular discourse. One must not point out the depredations of jihad and dhimmitude; to do so would offend the multiculturalist ethos that prevails everywhere today.
China will become (has become) a target of MuslimHate simply because they are NonMuslim.
As a westerner and academic, my multiculturist ethos remains unruffled that you point out that the "depredations of jihad and dhimmitude" exist. That's obvious and important, but not to a discussion of *why* they exist.
So many people write as though they imagine that legal or religious codes are the only factors influencing Islamic behavior. Can this be true? Does anyone imagine that these are the only factors influencing Western behavior?
More specifically, if one believes that 9/11 changed how Americans felt about the Middle East, why would one not believe that the far more extensive and lethal violence carried out by western countries over generations would have no effect on attitudes in the Middle East about the west?
One might imagine a world in which the Qu'ran served to create a world in which the sun never set on a Muslim empire. But in this world, the text that was so twisted was the Christian Bible. Should one look for explanations for that only in the text of the Bible, or might some of the reasons be terrestrial?
